Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at 443-618-2016 or SpringHollowFarmMD@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Pastured poultry refers to a method of raising poultry, such as chickens and turkeys, in a way that prioritizes their well-being and quality of life. Our pastured birds live in portable shelters and are moved to a new patch of grass daily to give them a fresh salad bar. Raising birds on pasture is good for the birds, good for consumers, and good for the land. Birds are able to engage in natural behaviors such as scratching and foraging for insects. Consumers are able to eat nutrient dense food, and managed manure from the birds helps to regenerate the land.

We recommend visiting the American Pastured Poultry Producers Association (APPPA). APPPA produced a video, Pastured Poultry: Better Way Forward, aimed at consumers that can be viewed on YouTube.

We currently provide on-farm pick-up and participate in the Olney Farmers and Artists Market from May through December. When your order is placed, we will contact you to schedule pick up.

Laying hens perform best when they receive 14-16 hours of light per day. In late fall and winter, decreased daylight hours impact egg production. While it is possible to "trick" the birds systems using artificial light, we prefer to use natural processes so our chickens are not stressed.

We currently building our herd of registered Dexter cattle. Finishing cattle on grass takes longer than grain-finished cattle. We anticipate having beef available in Fall 2025.
